What makes a cool concert poster? Any graphic designer can draw a few birds on a tree branch, slap on “The Shins” and call it a day. C. M. Ruiz designs his posters with a rawness that has more in common with DIY punk than modern indie rock aesthetics. Instead of a Mac and mouse, Ruiz uses a Sharpie and photo copier. “Happy Home” is a tribute to the people and places that have inspired Ruiz posters throughout the years. The exhibit consists of a small shanty house installation with fuzzy Xerox lining the walls, showing Carlos’ connection to the images and people therein.

10:13: Christmas is going on air...Catch 'em at Ursa Minor for Natty's birthday! On the 29th...

10:19: TYZ admits he's only interested in giving shot outs on air. Meanwhile, CMR is busy with the rec's.10:24: Live bloggin's hard. There are two buttons next to me. One says TALK BACK the other COUGH.

10:27: TYZ has declined the offer to talk on air for this upcoming break.

10:28: "I like it when you leave it on"

10:33: If anyone is reading this, can you bring us some beer? Preferably rainiers.

10:40: Ty's reading off the playlist. CMR can't since he forgot his glasses.

I just hung out with and saw the two coolest bands and who are luckily on the cool label out of Austria, BACHELOR RECORDS:

The night started at the IW house with beers and Mario Kart 64 which led to going to the venue and getting free pizza and progressed into awesome bands playing.

During the MS last song, they asked the crowd to join them on stage and everyone danced as their final tune played out.

We will get them a show in Seattle in the summer. So fun.

Northern Exposure art opening

Casey Catherwood curated this great poster show involving a lot of cool young poster designers at the new and sorta temporary art space, Ursa Minor. The show featured Darin Shuler, some posters by NowWhatDesign and other cool locals. Pretty sweet.

Pioneer Squaring

We were hanging out in Pioneer Square today and checking out the Design Commission who asked CMR to have a show soon in March. They were so super cool about having the install be whateverrrrr the artist wants to do so it's sure to be super cool.


ALSO- we went to the Tether Inc space to check on the Abominable Snowman show from last month to see how it went and how it is going and it turns out CMR's pieces were really sought after and tons of people dug them. A certain Mr. SanFran bought the 3 pieces though and didn't leave any info for us to say "Hey whats up thanks!" so to whomever he was- Thank You!

I have been working on their 12" art, thats going to come out on KILL SHAMAN sometime this year, but its been taking me so long because i want it perfecto.

Through the grapevine (i.e. personal email) I hear Old Blood spent their NYE doing coke off an iphone (so cool!) at a hipster party and spending the early morning at an LSD-fueled art kid party.

Artists from both coasts meeting up to share a common love of handmade- the result is the art show you won't want to miss on Sept 19. Part of the final chinatown art walk, artists Audria Brumberg, Chrissy Crum, and C.M. Ruiz are all displaying artwork in their preferred medias. Brumberg is displaying several of her large illustrations. They are intricate, beautiful, and really quite amazing to get lost in.

Crum created an art project where she had people give her personal family photos, after, she set them on fire and collected the ashes inside of eggs. Make sure when you come to not look at the ground because stepping and cracking the eggs is encouraged.

Ruiz will be finally revealing his process of making graphics. He will be displaying step by step pieces from original drawings or photos into the resulting posters or record covers you may own.

Please come. Cereal and milk will be provided.

Davilla 666 was in town; they are on tour from puerto rico and decided to come down and check out the instore at Blackbird and invite us to their show later that night...they were the SWEETEST guys in the world... they even invited us to a authentic Puerto Rican BBQ the next day!



THEN after the Davilla 666 show EVERYONE booked it to catch the beets 2nd set of the day at the black lodge, here are some pics

Ty Segall(yes!) and The Beets(yeah!) are playing an in-store at Blackbird in Ballard. 

CMR designed a cool poster for the show and it's going to be an exclusive new CMRTYZ shirt after a few tweaks and changes.

TYZ took this great footage of Ty Segall at SMMR BMMR down in Portland, OR a few weekends ago. 

Sunday on Labor Day weekend is going to be great in Seattle.

NEVER PAID FOR by CMRTYZ

"Never Paid For" is the first T-shirt series by CMRTYZ. The series based on gig posters that CMR has designed but was never paid for. (no hard feelings)

CMR bio

CMR never went to art school. In fact, he openly admits that he never studied graphic design techniques, doesn't know a thing about computer design programs, and doesn't even own a computer. With a good eye for composition and a bit of intuition, Ruiz often designs posters while riding the bus and completes layouts within an a few hours using sharpies, collaged images, and copy machines. His black & white and two-color posters are simple in the sense that they are bold and raw—pixilated and hand-drawn, they have an organic edge that is rarely seen in the work of contemporary designers. Having recently co-founded Real Fake Press in the basement of an old house in Seattle, Ruiz hopes to lead a resurgence of DIY, lo-fi aesthetic through silk-screening and analog design. When he's not designing a poster or drawing in his sketchbook, you'll likely find Ruiz shamelessly leeching off his friends, listening to garage-punk records, and drinking his coffee black.

He has worked with the likes of Spoon, Los Campesinos! No Age, Times New Viking, Black Lips, Crystal Castles, Davila 666, Wavves, Crystal Stilts, Yeasayer, Dead Ghosts, Daytrotter, Gigposters, Hardly Art, Douchemaster, Floridas Dying, Don't Stop Believin' and loads more!
